Frequently asked questions to the subject of jewelry care
Does the jewelry change when worn?
Yes! Jewelry lives on being worn. It changes and comes to life. It develops character. For me it is fascinating to watch the transformation of a piece, how it individually turns over and changes with each wearer.
With blackened, rhodanized and gold plated surfaces the pieces-especially rings- show a used look over time. The edges turn silver first. This can make an amazing contrast. If this look is not for you, you can bring it in for new blackening, rhodinisation or gilding anytime.
Polished surfaces look less gleaming over time, matte surfaces look slightly shinier. For deep-set structures it takes a long time to show a difference.
Rings show the most wear and tear. You wear them frequently, use your hands a lot and they are exposed to friction. Earrings, necklaces and bracelets are less affected. That is why I don’t offer gold plated rings, as they soon showcase the ravages of time and don’t bring joy on the long run.
Sweat, hand lotion, sun screen, perfume, hair spray, chlorine or soap can also lead to a changing of the surface of the jewelry. Silver jewelry can even turn black when worn by some people. There is a general risk, that soft stones like emerals, corals or pearls may lose their shine over time. Therefore it is best to remove sensitive jewelry when washing hands, going swimming or going to bed.
What’s the best way to take care of my jewelry?
Is your piece of jewelry dirty, take a toothbrush, luke warm water and dishwashing detergent. If the dirt can’t be removed, you can also leave it in a glass of water mixed with the detergent over night and repeat the procedure the next day. Dry with a soft cloth.
Ofcourse you can also come into my shop, I will gladly clean your piece of jewelry.
Pearls are very sensitive, it is best to seek the services of a gold smith, who will take care of your jewels.
